English Curriculum

At Liden Primary School, we use the Read Write Inc phonics scheme. Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes. Children are assessed and grouped according to their 'stage not age' and take part in daily phonics sessions.

We have chosen this programme because the children experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and 'tricky' words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.

Along with a thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking our loud and discussion, children are helped to read with a story-teller's voice.

Language and literacy

We will develop pupils’ spoken language, reading, writing and vocabulary as integral aspects of the teaching of every subject. English is both a subject in its own right and the medium for teaching; for children, understanding the language will provide access to the whole curriculum. Fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for success in all subjects.

Spoken language

Children will be taught to speak clearly and convey ideas confidently using Standard English. They will learn to justify ideas with reasons; ask questions to check understanding; develop vocabulary and build knowledge; negotiate; evaluate and build on the ideas of others; and select the appropriate register for effective communication. They will be taught to give well-structured descriptions and explanations and develop their understanding through exploring ideas. This will enable them to clarify their thinking as well as organise their ideas for writing.

Reading

Children are taught to read fluently, understand extended prose (both fiction and non-fiction) and will be encouraged to read for pleasure. We will start this by learning to decode text through our daily phonics teaching. This is started in reception and carrier on until daily until Year 2.

All year groups, including EYFS, will also participate in daily 'Book Talk' sessions. These sessions involve a whole class reading lesson where children read a class text aloud each day. These books are high quality stories that develop children's imaginations and they will enjoy.

These lessons encourage children to read the text with a focus on one of the 'FANTASTICs'. Through this approach, children will learn to think about the vocabulary used, the structure of texts and the choices the author has made through the writing process.

At Liden Primary we will do everything to promote wider reading. We are currently re-developing our library to encourage children to explore different texts and we are always encouraging children to read more at home by creating the '100 Club'.

Writing

Children will develop the stamina and skills to write at length, with accurate spelling and punctuation. They will be taught the correct use of grammar. They will build on what they have been taught to expand the range of their writing and the variety of the grammar they use. The writing they do will include narratives, explanations, descriptions, comparisons, summaries and evaluations: such writing supports them in rehearsing, understanding and consolidating what they have heard or read. Spelling

Children at Liden Primary follow the 'No Nonsense' spelling scheme. These involve daily lessons from Year 2 upwards which directly teach the spelling rules linked to the National curriculum. Each week involves focusing on a spelling rule which is taught and follow up activities to consolidate the learning follow. The teacher will also send home spellings linked to this spelling rule for children to learn at home and be assessed on at the end of the week.

Vocabulary development

Children’s command of vocabulary is key to their learning and progress across the whole curriculum. Teachers will therefore develop vocabulary actively, building systematically on children’s current knowledge. They will increase pupils’ store of words in general; simultaneously, they should also make links between known and new vocabulary and discuss the shades of meaning in similar words. In this way, children will expand the vocabulary choices that are available to them when they write.  It is particularly important to introduce children into the language which defines each subject in its own right, such as accurate mathematical and scientific language.
